Kumar Sangakkara is a legendary Sri Lankan cricketer who retired from international cricket in 2015. He had an illustrious career as a wicket-keeper batsman.
Sanju Samson is an Indian cricketer who currently plays domestic cricket and in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He is a wicket-keeper batsman as well.
The former Sri Lankan captain and current Rajasthan Royals coach, Kumar Sangakkara, provided a detailed perspective on the contentious dismissal of Sanju Samson during the match against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday (5th May) at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi.
The encounter between Delhi and Rajasthan witnessed a controversial umpiring decision when Shai Hope appeared to take a tight catch to dismiss the RR captain Sanju Samson on 84. However, the side-angle replays suggested that Shai Hope’s foot might have been close to the boundary rope, with many believing he may have touched the rope. Nevertheless, there was no conclusive evidence to substantiate this claim, leading the TV umpire to rule Samson out. Samson engaged in a heated discussion with the on-field umpire, and the Rajasthan Royals dugout was visibly displeased with the decision.
Sangakkara meticulously explained his viewpoint on the dismissal and shed light on the conversations with the umpires. He stated, “We were simply inquiring about the procedure and whether there was any doubt. The on-field umpire must abide by the TV umpire’s decision. Players have to accept it, and there are channels available to convey their opinions, either through direct conversation or the umpire’s report. We follow the established protocol; there is immense pressure on both players and umpires. We strive to resolve such situations in the best possible manner.”
